Q. What is Vegetarianism?

Wikipedia defines Vegetarianism as Vegetarianism is the practice of abstaining from consuming meat (red meat, poultry, seafood, and the flesh of any other animal). It may also include abstention from by-products of animal slaughter”.

Irrespective of your reasons, it’s great that you are examining the changing world of Vegetarianism.

If you’ve entered the world of vegetarian food for a while, you will already have some idea of what kind of vegetarian you are or intend. So here’s what’s important to know at the outset about becoming a vegetarian.

Q. Which groups of people prefer to get their nutrition from plant food?

There are five types of people who prefer a plant diet.

01. Lacto vegetarians

The diets of Lacto-vegetarians consist of no animal products or eggs but include dairy products, such as yoghurt, cheese, milk, etc.

02. Ovo-Vegetarians

Ovo-vegetarians follow a diet that contains no animal or dairy products but can contain eggs.

03. Lacto-Ovo vegetarians

Lacto-Ovo vegetarian diets don’t include animal products, but their diet will consist of dairy products and eggs.

04. Vegans

Vegans prefer a diet consisting of only plant-based foods, not including animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs, honey, etc.

05. Flexitarians

Flexitarians consume a plant-based diet with less fish, meat and poultry.

If you are unclear about what kind of vegetarian you prefer, know that not everyone knows this first. But by experimenting with a variety of foods, you will soon understand what you best like.

Q. How Easy Is It To Switch Away From Eating Meat?

Switching to vegetarian eating can be as easy or complex as you choose to make it. But, hardly anyone sets out to make switching challenging for themselves.

Be aware that there are millions of different non-meat dishes.

Entire cultures eat just vegetarian food, so there are certainly enough great foods from which you could make choices.

You can choose to spend ages preparing appetising, enjoyable multi-dished meals or choose to create quick and easy ones instead. Either way, plant-only meals have proven to be very satisfying for, dare I say it, all involved.

Keeping items like these to hand will be easy to read your meals.

    • Ready-to-eat, whole-grain breakfast cereals, quick-cooking whole-grain cereals such as oatmeal, whole-grain bread and crackers, such as rye, whole wheat, mixed grain, and other grains such as barley and bulgur wheat
    • A vegetarian alternative to burgers – generally plant-based burgers
    • Quinoa as a replacement for rice
    • Canned beans, such as pinto, black beans, and garbanzo beans
    • Brown rice, wild rice, microwave rice and pasta, tomato sauce, canned beans, and chopped vegetables.
    • Vegetarian soups – e.g., lentil, navy bean or minestrone
    • A wide variety of plain frozen vegetables
    • Canned and frozen fruit.
    • Fortified soy milk and soy cheeses (if avoiding dairy)
    • An assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables, which should be central to any diet

Q. Is there much less variety of vegetarian foods compared with meat?

As you study foods and realise that a diet with no meat doesn’t have to lack variety, you’ll find your decision to change from eating meat was not only a wise decision but a straightforward one when meal times come around.

Consider that many countries have vegetables of which most have never heard. And so there is much more variety of which you might be unaware.

Q. Why Switch To Eating Less Meat?

Well, it’s all about the diet and the benefits the diet confers, plus the extent to which the diet keeps you healthy.

A healthy diet is naturally restrictive and will typically require you to shun meat, fish and poultry products, which generally come high in fat and lower in nutrients.

Hence, a wholesome diet includes fibrous food that includes fresh vegetables and fruits. The fructose in fruit gets treated by the liver. In contrast, regular sugar from starchy foods gets managed when passing through the bloodstream.

Insulin gets produced to clear away any excess sugar from your bloodstream, sweeping it into your cells all to restore a proper blood-sugar balance.

This type of maintenance is rarely necessary when eating plant foods, so why not save yourself from yourself?.

Q. If I move away from eating meat, how can I obtain the requisite nutrients from non-meat sources?

Firstly, know that much of what you get from eating meat is available from other sources.

    • Protein: The human body requires sufficient protein to maintain healthy bones, skin, tissue and other organs. Some high protein food products include beans, soy, lentils, seeds, nuts and whole grains.
    • Vitamin B12: Every human requires vitamin B-12 to produce red blood cells and prevent anaemia. Some of the enriched breakfast cereals contain Vitamin B12 or fortified soy products.
    • Calcium: Calcium is chiefly required to strengthen your bones and make teeth stronger. In most green vegetables like turnip, spinach, collard greens, broccoli, and kale, you find calcium.
    • Iron: Red blood cells require iron which is a crucial nutrient. You get iron through eating peas, dry beans, lentils, whole-grain products, fruit like bananas, dark leafy green vegetables, enriched cereals, and even dry fruit.
You can also eat foods rich in vitamin C, like citrus fruits, strawberries, cabbage, broccoli and tomatoes.
    • Zinc: Zinc is a crucial nutrient that builds enzymes in the human body for improving the process of cell division and also helps in creating proteins. Some of the best food sources for zinc include soy products, whole grains, nuts and wheat germ.

If you ingest these fibrous fruits, it will guarantee a healthy life.
